Have you seen Fons and Porter’s  Easy Quilts – Spring 2013? You can even purchase a digital download of the magazine!

The “Crossroads” quilt in the magazine caught my eye. It’s designed by Madeleine Roberg. I adapted her 54 1/2″ x 71 1/2″ wall quilt for a 38″ x 40″ baby quilt. What a fun way to combine 49 bright, tonal 2 1/2″ squares with black and white strips to make a gift for hubby’s co-worker! DSCN3862

I quilted a waving ribbon with variegated thread through the black stripes and colorful center squares. The white background areas are quilted with various filler designs, one per quadrant. I am taking a “Quilting Negative Space” class on Craftsy.com with Angela Walters. I practiced quilting several of the designs she teaches in the online class: pebbles, leaves and small circles, spirals, and pumpkin seed in the large areas, and ribbon candy in the narrow white strips.

Hubby and I had fun photographing the quilt with big machinery as backdrops.DSCN3871Star, the horse, gave the quilt a sniff-check. Perhaps he hoped the quilt batting was oats rather than cotton.DSCN3880
