“Cutting Up” was the theme of my lecture for the Hayfield Country Quilters in Springfield, Va. on 5 March. I shared with them my intrigue with innovative cutting techniques.
We talked about Disappearing Nine Patch and Disappearing Four Patch. Some of the quilters present had made quilts by these methods; others were anxious to experiment.
I walked them through sewing and cutting my Slice and Dice pattern for Uneven Nine Patch (find a link on the Patterns page of this blog).
I demonstrated cutting and sewing “O My Stars,” a free pattern also found on the Patterns page.
They were spellbound with an explanation of “Prest-O Change-O!” This pattern uses two packages of 5″ charm squares to create an awesome, color coordinated lap quilt.
And I explained my Layer, Cut, Swap, and Sew method for efficiently using Layer Cakes (packages of pre-cut 10″ squares) and Fat Quarters.

I can’t wait to see pictures of the projects they create using an innovative cutting technique!
Besides sharing my ideas, I was inspired by the Hayfield Quilters’ show and tell, and I was particularly drawn to a green and white Single Irish Chain table covering on the refreshment table. More about that in the next post.
