“Holiday Sweets” Published!

Have you seen the December/January issue of Fons and Porter’s Quick + Easy Quilts? It contains eleven quilts suitable for holiday giving and décor or for working on throughout the winter months. I love the throw quilt on the cover of plaid houses designed by Natalie Crabtree, and I smile at the string-pieced stocking with chenille fabric for the toe created by Hope Yoder. A baby quilt based on a panel of baby animals, “Hot Cocoa,” and “Sweater Season” are a few more of the delightful patterns included in the issue.

On page 84 you’ll find my table runner and placemat set, “Holiday Sweets.” I used the “First Frost” line designed by Amanda Murphy for Benartex. The basis for the pattern idea is an efficient use of 10″ squares. The directions in the magazine instruct you to cut the half square triangles and squares from the 10″ squares individually, but I actually used a “stack and slice” technique when making the projects. For the table runner, I stacked four different 10″ squares and rotary cut through all at once, swapped the pieces so that each of the four blocks used each of the fabrics, and then sewed the blocks together. Similarly, I stacked, sliced, and swapped four squares to make the placemats. This speedy technique is super fun and easy! I hope you’ll try my design idea. Incidentally, I sent the runner and placemats for Christmas decorating to my sister who loves the sunny, Florida vibe of the fabrics.

I have an extra magazine to give to Trudy. I drew her name from those who commented “Done” for the November Block of the Month of the “Sisters” Quilt Along. Congratulations Trudy!

If your newsstand is already sold out of this issue, here’s a link to the Quilting Daily website: https://www.quiltingdaily.com/product-category/magazines-ebooks/ . You can order a print or digital copy.
