Spring QALs

It’s spring, and web-based Quilt Alongs are “busting out all over!” Since each one will result in a beautiful quilt, I am tempted to begin them all! (Click here for the classic organ piece “Spring is Busting Out All Over” played by Jane McKee Johnson.)

Of course, we have “Favorites,” the BOM I designed and publish on the first of each month here on this blog. Have you downloaded BOM #3? There are two blocks this month, “Weathervane” variation and “Ribbon Star.”

“Weathervane” Variation
“Ribbon Star”

I am quilting along with Sherri McConnell of A Quiliting Life. She publishes blocks on the first Thursday of each month. I am using scraps of brown and barn red from the “Ruby” line by Maywood Studio.

2022 Mystery Quilt from A Quilting Life

Quiltmaker magazine is celebrating their 40th year in print with a mystery quilt along. Blocks are published in each issue this year. I am sewing with red, pink, and cream prints from Laundry Basket Quilts.

“Ruby Jubilee” Clue #1

American Patchwork and Quilting magazine is celebrating their 30th year in print with instructions for blocks commemorating each of the 30 years. Purchase a current magazine issue to discover the details.

Lisa Bongean of Primitive Gatherings just released block #1 in her QAL “Oh Say Can You Sew.” She’s using Red, Cream, and Blue scraps for the design, but I have chosen to sew from my burgeoning bin of colorful batiks. And pretty soon Lisa will begin a Summer Blocks series with three designs to choose from.

“Oh Say Can You Sew” Clue #1

Moda Blockheads 4 QAL has just begun. There are about 30 quilt block designers, and a block is published each week on their blogs as well as on the modafabrics website. Click here to sign up for the newsletter which alerts you when blocks are online. To see this week’s block, click here. To read introductory background information, click here.

All these are sew much fun! Which QALs are you tempted to join?

  1. Thanks for collecting and posting *ALL* of the links, Aby! I had not yet joined Lisa Bongean’s “Oh Say Can You Sew” QAL but wanted to and I’m glad your post spurred me to check it out today. I learned two important things:

    (1) there are only 7 clues once a month (first Monday) for 7 months so we’ll be done before the holiday rush and

    (2) the clues are only free for the month in which they are released–then you have to pay $5 to get the PDF. Since I tend to download and hoard a mystery QAL until I see what it looks like and do my fabric selections at the end not throughout this is an important note! I’ll need to collect the PDFs every first Monday.

I’m also doing Quiltmaker’s “Ruby Jubilee” as you know, and I’m doing Sherri’s QAL at “A Quilting Life” but had forgotten to go get that clue, too (so thanks for spurring to get clicking). I’m doing Sherri’s large 12″ blocks only and doing them in red white and blue with gold frames. I guess between this one and Lisa Bongean’s red white and blue I’ll have some QOVs to donate at the end of 2022!!

I don’t actually sew the Moda Block Heads as they are released, but have built a huge library of block patterns during BH1 BH2 and BH3 and am subscribed to collect the BH4 blocks too 🙂

Oh and one that you did not mention is the Riley Blake Designs 2022 Block Challenge. It only runs for 16 weeks and is ending on May 17th but all the patterns (11 so far) are available for FREE download from the RBD web site. If I put the link here you’ll have to moderate my comment LOL The RBD block challenge is super fun and except for one or two blocks that have precision piecing to alignment points for a proper secondary design the rest of the 10″ block designs are all huge pieces, easy to assemble and fun to try. Plus some of the participants in the Facebook group keep getting creative about variations they design in themselves (and then many of us try out as well – got a very cute pansy pattern out of that!)

And of course, I’m doing your “Favorites” QAL. In fact, I already have my “Weathervane” and “Ribbon Star” done and assembled with a set of 9-patch units and some sashing and cornerstones. I need to send you a picture for participant shares later this month.

Soooo much sewing!! And because all that fun free just for me sewing isn’t enough, I currently have 3 paying customers for memory clothing items and a tee shirt quilt! Not to make a joke out of the storms moving through our area right now but when it rains in NC it really pours! I am loving it!

  2. I am re-arranging my working activities which will allow me more time very soon to sew. I am “slowly” working on a quilt with the Ribbon Star pattern for my grandson and his new wife. Hopefully, I can catch up with your present quilt-along to make myself a scrappy quilt this time. Beautiful designs and love your color combinations (as always).Ann J

  3. I am of course doing your QAL, A Quilting Life, and I am tempted to do Lisa’s with scraps, but I have already started the Moda Blockheads in the 4 inch size, and have started Alaska, so it may have to wait!
