June 17-21 is Camp week at Crossroads Church of Lillington. Children in 1st – 8th grades come to have fun, learn about Jesus, and learn skills and hobbies taught by adult volunteers. Each child registers for two “tracks;” the choices include the following: Cooking, Woodworking, 3D Printing, Cake Decorating, Cheerleading, Quilting, Sewing, Gardening, Experiments and Activities, Barn Quilt Painting, Arts and Crafts, Kickball, and Gaga Ball. This year’s theme is “Glow Crazy for Jesus.”
I am assisting in the Quilting and Sewing tracks where each camper is paired with an experienced adult volunteer. Giana is my camper for Quilt making. She is enjoying piecing on my Featherweight, but I will acquaint her with my Pfaff for the quilting segment of instruction.
Tip: When pinning fabrics for new or young quilters, place the pins parallel to the cut edge and about 3/4″ from the cut edge. (Zoom in to see the pins in the photo above.) This pinning method allows the quilter to keep sewing without removing or sewing over pins.
The campers in the Sewing track are making purses with 2 1/2″ wide strips using a quilt-as-you-go technique. Once the purses are complete, they will make small, snapped pouches for coins and an additional pouch for pens and pencils. I don’t have a picture of the sew-ists with their purses, but I do have a picture of the campers who made quilts. Each is rightfully proud of his/her accomplishment!

What a wonderful way to encourage young people through a church sponsored activity. It should give them a skill they wouldn’t otherwise get.

Wow, they did a great job on their quilts! I’m sorry I had to miss helping this year.
Working with the kids is so rewarding. I think that I almost get more out of it than the kids. I just love to see their expression when they have accomplished the goal!!!
It warms my heart to see young people take an interest in quilting. And there is no better teacher than you. We want to see our craft continue and this is a great foundation for them to continue building on.
