In shuffling through my pad of graph paper, I found a sketch of two simple quilt blocks. Ah, yes, I made this quilt in patriotic fabrics several years ago. But today I need a baby quilt for our pastor’s wife. I had three fat quarters of a baby animal print purchased, I’m sure, from a bargain bin at a quilt show years ago.
I found six coordinating prints in my stash and cut two 2 1/2″ wide strips from each. I also found enough white/black prints to frame each 5″ x 8 1/2″ rectangle of animal print.
Since I used only one fat quarter of the animal print for the eight rectangles, I cut the two remaining fat quarters into 3 1/2″ wide strips and joined them to make a border for the baby quilt. But the patchwork center needed a narrow accent border to add definition and focus. Solid black passed the audition.
The leftovers of the strip-pieced blocks were put to good use on the back of the quilt.
